The Energy Star® program provides you with the ability to choose appliances which significantly exceed the energy efficiency standards as regulated in the Canadian marketplace. Administered in Canada by NRCan, Energy Star is an international symbol of premium energy efficiency. This voluntary initiative is a collaborative effort between the industry and the government regulators; it has been wholeheartedly supported by Canadian manufacturers and retailers. The program has also benefited by incentives provided by many power utilities and provincial governments across the country which have further increased the acceptance of Energy Star appliances by Canadians.
Energy Star qualified appliances offer substantial electrical savings and significant benefits for the environment. For example, Energy Star washers use 50% less energy and 35-50% less water than traditional models. With respect to Energy Star dishwashers, these models save energy by using improved technology and less hot water. Energy Star refrigerators are equipped with such features as better insulation, high-efficiency compressors, and more precise temperature and defrost mechanisms.
Adoption of Energy Star® Appliances
The Energy Star program has been widely accepted by the Canadian industry and consumers. In 2009, the percentage of Energy Star appliances was higher than ever — see chart below for a year-over-year penetration in Canadian households:
