Industry Stewardship Plan Submitted to BC MoE for Portable and Floor Care Appliances

On June 1, 2010, the Canadian Electrical Stewardship Association (CESA) submitted an Industry Stewardship Plan to the British Columbia Ministry of Environment for portable and floor care appliances.  The Plan has been under development for more than 18 months, and is the result of a collaborative effort by members of CAMA, AHAM and CHHMA, along with BC Ministry representatives and non-government stakeholders.  The Plan covers portable kitchen, air treatment, weight and time measuring, garment care, floor care and personal care products and will enable manufacturers, brand owners, retailers and importers to meet their obligations under the waste electrical and electronic equipment section of the British Columbia Recycling Regulation.

CESA was incorporated nationally as a not-for-profit association with flexibility to expand the product categories and act on behalf of the industry beyond the BC program.  Product Care, a Vancouver based not-for-profit association that manages other EPR programs across Canada, was contracted to help develop the plan.  Approval of the Plan by the BC Ministry of Environment was received on July 12, 2010.

Collection Program for Mercury-containing Switches from End-of-Life Appliances

In accordance with the Waste Diversion Act (WDA) and Waste Diversion Ontario’s “Procedures for Industry Stewardship Plans,” the Canadian Electrical Stewardship Association (CESA) has submitted an Industry Stewardship Plan (ISP) on behalf of manufacturers and distributors that were responsible for selling appliances that contained mercury switches into Ontario.

The intention of this ISP is to create an independent program that satisfies the obligations of the appliance manufacturers under the new Ontario Consolidated Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (CMHSW) Program.
