Flat Panel Televisions Project Continued Growth in 2009

CEMC’s "2009 Consumer Electronics Market Trends and Forecast Report" Now Available; Includes Bonus Digital Camera Data from CITA

Toronto, ON, April 9, 2009 – Consumer Electronics Marketers of Canada (CEMC), an Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) council, and the Canadian Imaging Trade Association (CITA), announce the release of the newly-published report, 2009 Consumer Electronics Market Trends and Forecast. This report offers an insider’s look at past, current and future trends in the Canadian consumer electronics market.

"The Consumer Electronics industry is much more than selling products; it is an essential fabric of our common culture delivering entertainment, education and information. Despite the pessimism that is so pervasive in the media and from our leaders, we as an industry remain confident and optimistic," says Robert Gumiela, Chair of the CEMC Executive Committee.

CITA reported that sales of digital cameras increased in 2008 by 4% over the previous year, with manufacturers shipping more than 3.9 million digital cameras to Canadian retailers. Though overall actual results were somewhat less than expected, the digital single lens reflex (DSLR) sector led growth by 50% over 2007 units shipped. The sale of digital cameras in 2009 is projected to slow to 3.6 million units.

In the Canadian television market, CEMC reported relatively strong growth in 2008 for television shipments. Sales were just under 3.3 million units, representing an increase of 7.7% from 2007 levels. By comparison, the U.S. reported shipments of just under 30 million units. The product options continue to be the largest ever as choices by screen size will overlap in many technologies, giving consumers an unprecedented shopping experience and retailers a challenge to meet the needs of all. The sale of Flat Panel Plasma and LCD televisions have grown to account for 89% of the total television sales market in 2008, up from 69% last year. Flat Panel accounted for the shipment of just under 3 million units in 2008, and the category is forecasted to represent 95% of sales in 2009. Although difficult to determine exact numbers, CEMC estimates that in 2009, 67% of Canadian households will be capable of receiving an HD signal.
