Government Launches Energy and Electricity Workforce Alliance

The Government of Canada has announced the creation of a new Energy & Electricity Workforce Alliance to help address workforce and skills challenges as Canada expands electricity generation, modernizes the grid and responds to growing electrification needs.

 

Led by Electricity Human Resources Canada, with support from the Energy Council of Canada and the Canadian Renewable Energy Association, the Alliance will bring together employers, workers, educators, Indigenous partners and industry organizations to identify labour market challenges and strengthen skills development and talent pipelines across the energy and electricity sector.

 

This announcement aligns closely with EFC’s advocacy priorities. EFC members have identified the availability of skilled labour as the top factor influencing where organizations decide to expand operations. Workforce shortages across manufacturing, engineering, technical services, automation and grid modernization can increasingly constrain investment and the deployment of critical electricity infrastructure.

 

Through EFC’s Building Canada’s Future Electricity Grid – Supply Chain & Policy Roadmap, EFC has recommended that the federal government undertake a comprehensive review of electrical workforce training, skills pathways and credentialing to ensure Canada has the knowledge, skills and capabilities required to implement the grid technologies needed for future growth.

 

EFC welcomes the establishment of the Alliance and will continue advocating for workforce strategies that support Canada’s electrical and automation sector and the expansion and modernization of Canada’s electricity grid.
